Human Nature
Drawings during artist in residency in Onishi, Japan
I made these drawings while I was staying for 6 weeks at Shiro Oni Studio, an artist in residency in a village north of Tokyo, Japan. On the drawings you see three observations of mine of the interactions between humans and nature in Japan.
The series exists of three drawings of 45 by 35 cm.
I made the illustraties using collages of pictures that I made while I was traveling through Japan and staying in Onishi.

Human Nature – O dear deer, look there!
Portrayal of interactions I observed in Nara, Japan, with the deer there. They walk free in the park filled with temples, but are they wild? They have learned how to react to people in order to get food biscuits. They don’t always receive respect in return.
Human Nature – We admire the solid and soggy.
Something that is curious for me in Japan, is the admiration of stones, looking at the stone industry in Onishi and the zen gardens made out of stone in Kyoto. For me this always was a dead material, but indeed the stones in Japan, they live! Mosses are allowed to grow here and close to temples people help them by throwing water on stones.
Human Nature – Will you make this concrete?
Concrete seems a popular material in Japan. It is the material to tame mountains and rivers, make them organised. According to experts it’s not always needed for safety. This is a compilation of places across Japan that I have visited: Tamano, Yufuin and Onishi.

Pictures by me. The pictures where you see me, are by Julia C. Martin.
